“COUNT ME IN” CENSUS 2020

It is almost time for the 2020 Census, an official count that takes place every ten years of every person living in the United States. Harrison County School District is proud to team up with the U.S. Census Bureau to make sure our community is accurately represented in the 2020 Census. We want to help you understand how the data will impact local schools, health care, housing, employment, transportation, and public policy.

Why Does the Census Matter?

Census data will be used to determine how more than $675 billion in federal government resources will be distributed to states and communities over the next ten years. The data is used to:

• determine federal funding for schools, hospitals, fire departments, roads, child care centers, senior centers and other services
• allocate funds to key federal programs, including:  Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicare Part B, Highway Planning and Construction, Section 8 Housing Program, Title I Grants, Special Education Grants (IDEA), State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Head Start
• determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and draw boundaries of congressional and state legislative districts

How Does Your Data Help Your School?

The census helps our country provide fair education to all our students. It is used to:

• determine where Title I Grants go, which helps schools in serving students from low-income families
• assign Special Education grants to states
• fund the National School Lunch programs
• provide grants to improve teacher quality and preschool programs
• determine how to best meet the needs of students in a community

How Do I Complete the Census Form?

• The process is very easy. In March 2020, 95% of households will receive an invitation in the mail from the U.S. Census Bureau with instructions to visit their website.  For the other five percent, a census taker will drop off the invitations to households with post office boxes.
• Once you log onto the Bureau’s website, you will fill out a simple 10-question form. Every person, including children, residing in the household needs to be included on the form in order to be counted. The information that will need to be provided includes: name, relationship to head of household, gender, age, birthday, Hispanic origin and race, and status as a home owner or renter. The form can be completed in about 10 minutes. If a household does not respond, the Census Bureau will mail two reminders and a paper census form in the fourth mailing.
• Another option for completing the form is via telephone. You can call 888-839-8632 for more information.
• You can also mail your census form.
• If a household does not submit a completed census form, then the Census Bureau will send a census taker to that address to collect the information in person. The home visits will start in late-April through early-July of 2020.

Important Dates:

• March 2 - 6, 2020:  Census Statistics in Schools Week – Schools will use resources to teach students the importance of the Census
• March 2020:  Public can start responding to 2020 Census via online, mail, or phone
• April 1, 2020:National Census Day
• June - July 2020:Census takers go door to door to count people who have not responded to the 2020 Census
• 2021:  Initial 2020 Census data will be available to the public

Ya casi es hora del Censo de 2020, un conteo oficial que tiene lugar cada diez años de cada persona que vive en los Estados Unidos. Harrison County School District se está uniendo con la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos para asegurarse de que nuestra comunidad esté representada con precisión en el Censo de 2020. ¿Cómo Ayudan sus Datos a su Escuela?

El censo ayuda a nuestro país a proporcionar una educación justa a todos nuestros estudiantes. Se utiliza para:

• determinar a dónde va el Title I Grants, lo que ayuda a las escuelas a servir a los estudiantes de familias de bajos ingresos
• asignar becas de Educación Especial a los estados
• financiar los programas nacionales de almuerzo escolar
• proporcionar subvenciones para mejorar la calidad del maestro y los programas preescolares
• determinar la mejor manera de satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes en una comunidad

¿Cómo Puedo Completar el Formulario 2020 Census?

• El proceso es muy fácil. En marzo de 2020, el 95% de los hogares recibirán una invitaciónpor correo de la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos con instrucciones para visitar su sitio web.   Para el otro cinco por ciento, un examinador dejará las invitaciones a los hogares con buzones de correos.
• Una vez que inicie sesión en el sitio web de la Oficina, rellenará un sencillo formulario de 10 preguntas. Todas las personas, incluidos los niños, que residen en el hogar deben ser incluidas en el formulario para ser contadas. Fechas Importantes:

• 2 - 6 de marzo de 2020: Estadísticas del Censo en la Semana de las Escuelas – Las Escuelas utilizarán los recursos para enseñar a los estudiantes la importancia del Censo
• Marzo de 2020: El público puede comenzar a responder al Censo 2020 por internet, correo o teléfono
• 1 de abril de 2020: Día del Censo Nacional
• Junio - Julio 2020: Los participantes del censo van de puerta en puerta para contar a las personas que no han respondido al Censo 2020
• 2021: Los datos iniciales del Censo 2020 estarán a disposición del público
